Bentley today teased the interior of its first ever EV called Torcal.
— Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt) August 17, 2026
The interior will use Merino wool for the first time in automotive history, as well as wood trim with up to 1,000 layers.
"Torcal introduces a new generation of materials, finishes and textures, including Merino wool. Long celebrated in the worlds of fashion and interior design for its softness, warmth and natural elegance, wool has historically lacked the durability required for automotive applications. That challenge has now been overcome.
Bentley has partnered with Fox Brothers, the Somerset cloth maker that has been weaving fine wool fabrics since the 1700's. The collaboration resulted in the world's first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric capable of meeting the exacting demands of a luxury vehicle.
Torcal also debuts a new Ombre Veneer. Created from sustainably sourced walnut off-cuts and craft (recycled) paper, the veneer is formed from up to 1,000 individually selected layers that are carefully pressed together before being sliced to less than a millimeter in thickness."

If it doesn’t drive itself it’s worth $0 to me

They are trying to overcompensate for lack of intelligence by offering material luxuries. This will not end well

I’ll buy one if they license FSD.

Not gonna lie, that Merino wool looks ridiculously soft in the pics. First time in automotive history though? I feel like some older Saabs or something had wool seats back in the day. Still, 1000-layer wood trim is pretty insane. Curious how that wool actually holds up long-term in a car.

The claim that they use Merino Wool for the forst time in Automotive History is not correct. Saab 900 GT had Merino Wool in 1994.

Ahhh. Miss my old Saab Story.

Heavy innovation for the times.
Also, SAAB had wood on their steering wheels too. We used to drive SAAB.

I work as a millwright in a plywood plant. Fucking yay! 😂 I’ll keep my Cybertruck 📐
— Carl, STFU 🇺🇸 (@CarlsCreek42) August 17, 2026
Wool interior would last one trip to the lumber yard; my truck seats wipe down with a shop rag and that's the only luxury I've ever used.

Wait a second, they're new "wood" is glued together form thousands of pieces?
— Max-Eric️ (@MaxEricThiel) August 18, 2026
That sounds not like a premium wood, that sounds like a very cheap way of using wood vinirers.
Bentley is a textiles company, not an engineering company.

People comparing Bentley’s new features to Tesla (and FSD) are missing the point entirely.
— Prasad (@Prasad_C_) August 18, 2026
Nobody who buys a Bentley is shopping for “ease of driving.” They’re buying a hand-built showpiece. The materials, the craftsmanship, the presence — that’s the product. Wool and real veneer aren’t compromises; they’re the reason the car exists for that customer.
Different buyer. Different priorities.
